What a Roof Truss Must Do

A steel roof truss carries the roof over a given span using a triangulated framework of members. It is one of the most practical systems for warehouses, workshops, factories, and industrial sheds, where the building has a regular plan and a straightforward roof. Selecting the right truss means matching it to the loads it will actually see — not to a default size. The factors below are the ones that decide the design.

A roof truss is efficient because its triangulated form carries load in axial force rather than bending, which suits straight members working in tension and compression. That efficiency depends on the loads being known — so gathering the inputs below matters as much as the truss itself.

Building Span

Span is the starting point. It sets the depth the truss needs and the forces its members must carry. As span increases, member forces rise quickly, so a truss that suits a short building will not simply scale to a much longer one. The clear span should be confirmed by the client rather than assumed from the building width. Trusses can be single-span or arranged in a repeating series, and the choice affects how loads reach the columns, so confirming the span pattern early prevents a redesign later.

Roof Slope

Roof slope affects both the truss geometry and how the roof sheds water and snow. A steeper slope changes the load direction on the truss and the detailing at the ridge, while a flatter roof may need closer attention to drainage. Slope is chosen with the roofing system, not separately from it. A well-chosen slope also reduces standing water on the roof, which protects both the waterproofing and the steel below.

Dead Load

Dead load is the permanent weight the truss supports: its own members, purlins, roof panels, insulation, and any ceiling or services below. Because it never leaves the structure, it must be accounted for at the design stage, not added later.

Suspended Load

Lighting, HVAC units, sprinkler lines, signage, and any crane rail are suspended loads. They are easy to underestimate and expensive to retrofit, so they should be listed before the truss is sized.

Steel Grade

The truss is commonly fabricated from steel such as Q235 / S235JR or Q345 / S355JR, chosen to match the design standard and the loads. A higher grade can reduce member size for a given load, but it must be confirmed against the project's calculation and standard rather than selected by habit. In many markets Q235/S235JR and Q345/S355JR are common, with members and connections fabricated to the project drawings.

Connection

Truss connections — at the chords, at the ridge, and at the supports — transfer the forces that hold the roof together. The connection type should suit the fabrication and the site method, and it should be shown clearly on the drawings so it is built as designed.

Roofing Panel

The roof panel system, typically a metal panel with EPS, PU, or Rockwool insulation, adds dead load and determines the fixing detail over the trusses. Panel weight and fixing method both feed back into the truss design.

Corrosion Protection

Finally, the truss must be protected for its environment, commonly by hot-dip galvanizing or painting. In humid or industrial buildings this matters as much as structural strength, because a well-designed truss with a failing coating will not last its intended service life. The same protection principles apply as for any steel structure: prepare the surface properly, cover edges and connections, and plan for maintenance.
